The Empty Car Convoy: The Ultimate Test Drive

A car that can drive itself is no longer a far off dream. Hyundai has put their new technologies to the test in this video. “We were blown away by the video! The 2015 Hyundai Genesis is truly a leader in safety technology,” says Mark Medinger, owner of Savannah Hyundai.

The video is called the Empty Car Convoy. A convoy of 2015 Hyundai Geneses are being driven through a test site in California. At first, it seems like a normal test drive, but soon takes an unbelievable turn. One by one the stunt drivers jump out of the moving vehicles onto a padded trailer, leaving just the front car with a driver. The driverless 2015 Hyundai Geneses continue to follow the leader. And then the lead driver is blindfolded and takes his hands off the wheel, leaving the vehicles to fend for themselves on the open road.

The 2015 Hyundai Genesis employs several cutting edge technologies to make this stunt possible.

The advanced Smart Cruise Control keeps the vehicle at a safe distance from the vehicle in front of it. A radar sensor is located in the front bumper to judge the distance of cars ahead. When it detects a vehicle, it automatically slows the Genesis down maintaining a safe distance with the vehicle ahead.

The Lane Keep Assist system goes one step further than the Lane Departure Warning which sends a warning to the driver when the vehicle crosses a lane without a signal. The Lane Keep Assist system actually applies corrective steering assistance to keep the vehicle in the lane, providing you with a safe arrival. In the video, you can see it working as the convoy goes around a curve. The Lane Keep Assist system keeps the vehicles within the lane.

At the climax of the video, a truck in front of the convoy slams on its brakes. The 2015 Hyundai Geneses kick in their Automatic Emergency Braking system. Each Hyundai Genesis stops before an impact with the car in front of it. The Automatic Braking System uses both cameras and radar sensors. If a crash is imminent and the driver does not react, the system deploys Automatic Emergency Braking. The system can even apply full brake force stopping power from 5 to 50 mph, giving you an added element of safety.

“The future is here at Savannah Hyundai! Now, we don’t recommend trying this at home, but it’s nice to know that Hyundai has your back when you are driving,” says Medinger. If you want to see this technology for yourself, schedule a test drive or stop by the dealership at 7011 Abercorn St Savannah GA 31406.

About the JD Power 2014 Initial Quality Study
For 28 years, JD Power and Associates has ranked vehicles based on the first 90 days of ownership.  According to the study, “Initial quality is determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality.” Overall, JD Power saw an increase in problems this year over last year. In 2013, the average score was 113 PP100, this year there was a 3% increase to 116 PP100.  The increase in problems among all-new vehicles is found mainly in the areas of voice recognition, Bluetooth pairing and audio systems.

According the press release from JD Power, “the 2014 U.S. Initial Quality Study is based on responses from more than 86,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2014 model-year vehicles surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The study is based on a 233-question battery designed to provide manufacturers with information to facilitate the identification of problems and drive product improvement.”
